Allerthorpe Revisited 2

Another visit to Allerthorpe produced many of the same species as the post below on 3rd of March. This time one of the highlights were the over- excited 3, possibly 4, male Great Spotted Woodpeckers around the entrance to the YWT reserve. Later, Maureen identified the male Stonechat, and we eventually found the more elusive female. The morning was punctuated by a fine display of birdsong. We saw at least one Green Woodpecker, but there may have been 2. It was relocated after lunch. The afternoon was much quieter, but one of the highlights was a soaring female Sparrowhawk and another was a Marsh Tit, allowing very close views on the return journey to the car park. Away from birds the great number of Common Frogs was a fascinating sight. This venue becomes even better for birds in May & early June, which is when any future visits will take place.
