The weather forecast was correct today - unfortunately! It was overcast and we did have a couple of sleet showers - not the best conditions for photography! Be warned Sewerby Park is now charging £4 for entry until October! This must be one of the best places for close views of Stock Doves - normally a shy species. At lunch time a male even displayed to a female whilst I snapped away. The Stock Doves were more timid when the full class were present, but we still had good views of a single bird. The woodpeckers stopped drumming and the Mistle Thrushes ceased singing once the session began! Despite this we did have close views of all the common garden birds. A Curlew flew over the walled garden and a Tawny Owl was heard hooting. In addition a Kestrel swooped down in the deer enclosure. We thought it had caught something, but it was only when I checked the photo I realised it had a worm in its talons! Also in the enclosures were c.10 Redwing and plenty of Chaffinches. On the return journey Morag also identified a Treecreeper in the same location. Unfortunately, it was too far off for a photo. On the beach there were about 6 Purple Sandpipers, but most of the Redshank, Oystercatchers and Ringed Plovers had left. An elusive Rock Pipit flew out of reach high on the cliff behind us. Despite the poor weather we saw a great variety of species today.
