An unscheduled visit to our bad weather standby of North Cave Wetlands. The highlight this afternoon were a pair of Green Woodpeckers with the male displaying to the female by fluffing out his rump & hopping around her. This was a “lifer” for Mike, but the best views ever of this species for most of the rest of the group. In the morning Margaret was the first to spot the Green Woodpecker in the same location – on the path adjacent to the “Snipe Field”. Louise’s day was made when John spotted a male Siskin on the feeders near the gate – she missed them the other week at Waters’ Edge. Some of the morning group were lucky enough to see a Brambling on the edge of the Maize Field. Also present were 4 Goosanders (1 drake), and a handful of Snipe (above photo); plus more than 35 Oystercatchers, 13+ Skylarks and good numbers of Shelduck, Gadwall, Teal, Pochard & Tufted Duck. You can usually rely on seeing upwards of 40 species at this rewarding site, and today was no exception.
