It's not often the classes go on a twitch, but we made an exception today for the Belted Kingfisher, which apparently is the size of a Jackdaw. We had a good look for it, but couldn't track it down, and then we learned we may just have been too late, as it had last been sighted on the 2nd of April 2005! We had brilliant views of a Barn Owl in direct sunlight all morning and a few fly-by Green Woodpeckers, plus a standard female Great Spotted Woodpecker. The warblers were rather quiet, but we did hear a Water Rail. A bubbling Curlew was more unexpected, but Skylark numbers seemed to be down. The insects put on a better show in the afternoon sunshine. We probably need to go to this venue in May to ensure a richer haul of bird species!
