More Honey Buzzards!

Grey Wagtail
Spotted Flycatcher
Pied Wagtail
Garden Warbler
Record shot of Willow Warbler
The latest YBF meeting took place at Wykeham raptor viewpoint. The Hull contingent arrived early and had a walk around the nearby Hilla Green area. We had good views of several species including: Grey Wagtail, Kingfisher, Spotted Flycatcher (apparently nest-building), Marsh Tit, Goldcrest, Heron, Jay, Great Spotted Woodpecker and we heard Blackcap, Garden Warbler and Whitethroat. After walking round both areas of the bridge crossing the road we made our way to the raptor viewpoint to meet up with other YBF members. From here we had amazingly good views of a Garden Warbler singing lustily either for any sort of partner, or before starting a second brood. Also present were a Bullfinch, several Willow Warblers, plenty of Chaffinches and a singing Dunnock. We had distant views of Common Buzzard and Goshawk. We decided to change our position to down in the valley, looking up to the raptor viewpoint. From here a bird of prey was spotted which seemed to have a longish tail, and it flew with its wings fairly horizontal, until it decided to indulge in some vigorous wing-clapping - a Honey Buzzard. OK, it couldn't compare with the views at Spurn on Friday, but it was great to see it displaying. Other birds seen from this point included a Redstart, plus Yellowhammer, Jay, Kestrel (distant), Common Buzzard and Mistle Thrush. We returned to Hilla Green where we were able to add an immature Dipper to our tally, but there were fewer species around than those we saw at 9am. The Hull contingent set off for home at this point, whilst the brave souls who remained retreated to a pub for an evening meal before they ventured back to Wykeham for Nightjars and bats, and biting insects....
