Common Ink Cap?
Today's planned exposed venue had to be abandoned because of the strong winds, so we went to Tophill Low instead. The wind was even worse than expected, and at first the birds were very hard to locate. A long wait at North Marsh eventually proved worthwhile when the coffee drinkers ensured a young male Kingfisher put in an appearance. Other birds on D Reservoir included: Great Crested & Little Grebes, Pochard, Tufted Duck etc. The Visitor Centre added Coal, Blue & Great Tits, as well as Chaffinch, Goldfinch & Greenfinch. During the afternoon the weather ameliorated somewhat, so in addition to a female Kingfisher this time, we saw Heron, Ruddy Duck [female], Marsh Harrier [young male], Buzzard & Sparrowhawk. Some of the group had good views of a Goldcrest & a flock of c.30 Long-tailed Tits looked into the North Marsh hide - at least 2 Coal Tits were in attendance. Let's hope the winds have now eased off for good, and if they do strengthen they emanate from a more propitious direction for birds - the North East! A parasol mushroom in the car park was a nice bonus!
