Rest of Week 1

Goldcrest
On Wednesday despite the wind we went to Welton Waters as planned.  It seemed rather quiet, but we still encountered more than 50 species.

Highlights included a large skein of Pink-footed Geese, Cetti's Warbler, Kingfisher, Golden Plover, Redpoll, Black-tailed Godwit, Goldcrest, Chiffchaff, Roe Deer etc.  A possible Yellow-Browed Warbler was heard by another observer on the riverbank.

On Thursday it was far too windy for Paull, so we had to switch to N.Cave Wetlands. We saw plenty of birds despite the weather incl: Grey Wagtail, Kingfisher, 11 Pink-footed Geese, Pochard, Teal, Little and Great Crested Grebes, Shoveler, Swallow, House Martin, Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting, Snipe and plenty of Hawkers and Darters and a very interesting caterpillar, which the YWT recruiter identified as a Pale Tussock Moth caterpillar.

On Friday we went to Far Ings as planned.  The wildlife was a bit disappointing.  Highlights included a Goldcrest, and many Chiffchaffs, singing Cetti's Warblers, several skeins of Pink-footed Geese flying over, several sunbathing Commas, Red Admirals and a single Speckled Wood. Also enjoying the sun in the sheltered parts were Hawkers and Darters.  There were Lapwings and Redshanks on the beach, and a large flock of Golden Plovers on Chowder Ness in the morning.  After lunch Barbara identified a Kingfisher from over a quarter of a mile away, and her husband tried to do one better by spotting a Cetti's Warbler, which came right out into the open.
